What is the Process for Getting Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a permanent option that many find appealing. They can replace any missing or extracted teeth. Unlike bridges, dental implants often are a better solution because there is no need to alter any other teeth when placing a new tooth.

The process that comes along with dental implants happens over a few months. To start off, the implant itself needs to be installed. A screw is carefully placed in to the jaw bone. A small incision is made along the gum where the implant will be inserted. This can be done at the same time for multiple implants when necessary. After all implants are placed, the gums are sutured.

At this point, the implant needs time to heal, which can be anywhere between 3 to 6 months. It is during this time that the jaw bone will form around the implant. This process is called osseointegration. Temporary crowns can be placed at this point to allow you to eat and speak normally and still have a the appearance of your normal smile.

Once the implant has healed, an abutment is placed on the implant. The abutment acts as the base for the new tooth to use. An impression of the abutment will be taken and then used to help create the permanent restoration. Some offices can create this restoration on site, or they can be sent out to a lab to be made. After the restoration is finished, it can then be attached permanently. Your smile will be fully restored and have a natural look and with time will feel exactly like your normal teeth.

Metal-Free Alternative

Ceramic implants offer a non-metal alternative that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding bone, resulting in a permanent, stable, and incredibly natural-looking solution.

Patients with missing or broken teeth can benefit from dental implants. Ceramic implants are particularly suitable for individuals with metal allergies or those who have encountered issues with metal implants in the past. If you are seeking a reliable and biocompatible solution, ceramic implants offer an excellent alternative for your dental needs.

For individuals with metal allergies, Zirconium Dioxide or “ceramic” implants provide an ideal alternative. These implants not only fuse securely with the bone but also offer the same level of stability and strength as titanium implants, making them a reliable choice for those seeking a biocompatible solution.

The implant process for non-metal (ceramic) implants follows the same procedure as titanium implants, with the only difference being the materials used. It involves a straightforward and brief surgery to place the ceramic base, followed by the placement of a crown on top to complete the restoration.

Make sure you talk to your dentist about any medications your take regularly prior to your surgery to make sure they are approved.

Dental Implants

All-On-4

This dental procedure offers the ability to support an entire arch of teeth using only four implants, whether on the upper or lower jaw. These four titanium screws serve as replacements for natural roots, providing robust support for a full set of teeth. If you are missing a significant number of teeth and have adequate bone support, this treatment may be the perfect solution. By placing four strategically positioned screws in the jaw, we can restore your smile with a full arch of new teeth, offering a comprehensive replacement for all your missing teeth in one efficient procedure.

Mini Implants

Mini dental implants differ from regular implants because they are about half the size in diameter when compared to a regular dental implant.  There are several benefits to using a mini implant and can be used in situations where a regular implant would not be usable.  Because of their smaller size, mini implants can be used when a space is too narrow for a regular implant.

One of the main uses for mini implants is to install a full upper or lower denture.  Implants would be placed along the gum line and anywhere between four to six implants will be used and they will act as a base for the denture.  Instead of using one implant for each tooth, an entire set of teeth will be used along either the upper or lower gum line.

Another advantage of using mini implants is that no incision needs to be made to place the implant.  They can often be inserted directly through the gum and straight in to the bone.  This reduces the amount of recovery time needed, as well as the ability to place the restoration much sooner than with traditional implants.

The cost of mini implants is not as expensive as regular implants as well.  To find out of mini implants are an option you should consider, contact us today.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Studies have shown that healing and tissue regeneration after surgery can be sped up by using our own blood cells.  In this procedure plasma, white blood cells and platelets are used.  Various surgical procedures, as well as oral surgery performed in many private offices use the protein that is carried by the platelets.

We frequently will use platelet rich plasma or PRP in oral surgery procedures that include soft or hard tissues take from each patient.  The proteins from the plasma are gathered in an uncomplicated procedure that takes mere minutes.  The chances that a patient successfully heals from their surgery increases greatly when dentists make use of PRP.  Should a patient have a medical history that indicates they have problems from soft or hard tissue regeneration, PRP is the key to a favorable outcome.

Dental Implant FAQ

Dental implants are a new permanent root for a missing tooth.  Screws made of titanium are inserted directly in to the jaw bone.  An abutment, as well as a crown, are placed on the implant that is permanent and will have the look and feel of a natural tooth.

Dentures differ from dental implants because they are a set of teeth, or partial set of teeth, that can be removed.  They also need to be cared for differently than normal teeth.  Dental implants permanently replace missing teeth and have no special needs when cared for.  They are just like your natural teeth.

Unlike dentures, dental implants have a natural look and feel to them and are permanent. There is no need to worry about eating or not eating certain foods or being embarrassed for any reason. Dental implant procedures are quite successful and reasonably priced as well.

Only dentists with the requisite training can perform the procedure needed to place a dental implant themselves right in their office. Most dentists refer you to an implantologist, or another specialist that would be able to complete the procedure. At Lasting Smiles, we specialize in Dental Implants and can perform the procedure in our office.

Pricing on dental implant procedures will vary. Some of the factors to determine cost include the condition of your teeth and gums, the number of implants being placed, whether or not insurance will cover any costs and more. A consultation with us will help us establish a price for implants for you and whether a financing plan is necessary.

Local anesthetic is used before the procedure starts, so that you will not feel any pain. Should you have any concerns or have any fear or anxiety, you and your dentist can discuss sleep dentistry.

Implants are just like your natural teeth. With proper care your implants will last your entire life. Having good habits with your oral hygiene and scheduling regular dental visits are the keys to successfully maintaining your implant.
